A Letter to my Family:
I have desired to share the world of Burning Man with you all. My Family with a capitol F. I have gained a new appreciation of the difference between my Family and my chosen family. Many would say a chosen family are considered friends. I have grown to see that concept as a much more undefinable term. Friends are just people we have not met yet. Our chosen family are the people we choose to find ourselves around whether they are immediately related or not.
It is not an easy leap considering our lives are ruled by our fears and lack of free time. Time being our most precious resource of which I have created a vast amount. I have also realized that convincing and changing other people is a waste of time. Instead I prefer to live by example. While my choices are not the ones others would make I believe the end result is what all desire. The ability to do what I want when I want. It is not perfect and I kinda like it that way.
This email is a relapse into the convincing department of my life. Here are two sources that present the concept of Burning Man that are respected by those we all know and love. TED and WNYC:radio labs (if you are not familiar with this resource please find your way her at some point. really amazing stories)
The TED explains a world collaboration project for the Temple at Burning Man. It is effigy that is burned on the last day- that day after the Man is burn (the central effigy).17 mins http://bit.ly/HSenvL
The WNYC:Radio Labs show discusses the Wagner Ring Cycle and makes comparison to the Burning Man experience. It is a longer program than most can obligate. 58Mins
While my project The Ball Of Light is not the same level as either The Temple or the Ring cycle I feel it is certainly the correct direction of community driven projects. Pulling away from the need to compete and moving towards working together toward unifying concepts not needing to be "productive". Allowing for collaboration to direct the project while staying within a guide.
Not really sure what will come of this email. Just glad I shared it.
I have now written this and have decided to post this on my blog since I think the information is worth spreading/saving/documenting.
Love you all,
Gregory
